While some pets find being home alone stressful, most have adjusted and have their own routine. Yes, some pets do not get their daily needs met for exercise, social engagement and enrichment, but many do. If their needs were not met before, being home has allowed our pets to have more attention from us and more interaction. This is a good thing but to be successful going forward, two things are very important.
First, create expectations for daily exercise. Depending on the age of your dog, one to two walks-a-day is plenty. Next make sure to allocate time for social engagement with a set schedule, this will help your dog know when their expectations will be met. Finally, don’t forget to add in programmed rest/relaxation time in a special spot. Not just so we can work, but so our dog is prepared for when we are not always at their “beck and call”.
