Rewards-based training uses things the animal likes; including food, toys, play and praise whereas punishment-based training uses things the animal finds scary or painful as consequences. When punishment-based training is used, it can increase fear and stress for the animal; leading to problematic behaviors. In this video, Christine Michaud explains the difference between the two scenarios and why rewards-based training is always the better approach.
